Accessing ReferenceUSA - Firewalls

Normally, when accessing ReferenceUSA from outside of the library, you should be prompted to enter only your library card number. If you are seeing the Username/Password login screen when you try to access ReferenceUSA, there are two possible solutions. There is a possibility is that your security settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer may be set too high to access ReferenceUSA. Troubleshooting the Norton Firewall

Sometimes connections to databases can be affected by a firewall. These instructions apply only to the Norton firewall product. By default, Norton Internet Security (NIS) and Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) block referrer information. This help page will discuss how to pass referrer information to specific Web pages.

Situation

You want to allow Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) to pass referrer information to a specific Web page.

Solution

If you want to allow referrer information to pass to a particular Web page, you must create a rule for it.

To create a rule:

  1. Open the list of Web sites
    1. Open NIS or NPF.
    2. Click Options.
    3. Click Internet Security or Personal Firewall. This step is not always needed.
    4. Click Advanced Options.
    5. Click the Web tab.

  2. Add a new Web site
    1. Click Add Site. A new site/domain box appears.
    2. Type in http://referenceusa.com, the site that you want to receive the referrer information and click OK. That site name appears in the left frame of the Advanced Options window.

  3. Configure the new Web site:
    1. Click the name of the new site.
    2. Click the Privacy tab.
    3. Check the "Use these rules for..." box.
    4. Change the Referrer from "Block" to "Permit." Your screen should look something like this:

    5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

  4. Click OK to close the Options window.
